Hello everybody, welcome back.
So today we're going to talk about one of the things that I know women do while they're losing weight that makes things, I think, a hundred times harder. And that is saying, I'm losing it slow.
You say that when, in fact, you ain't losing weight slow at all. Most women want to lose weight at a fucking ridiculous pace that they call fast.
We're going to clear some shit up today because I want you to lose your weight for good. I do not want you losing weight ridiculously fast or slow.
Now, this is important because how you talk about losing weight dictates how the fuck it feels while you're doing it.
So let me ask you this. When is the last time you thought, I'm losing slow, and it felt amazing?
If I had to guess, never.
Even if you're telling yourself, I'm losing it slow, because it sounds like the right thing to do or it rails against diet culture, I bet there's a small part of you deep down who's thinking, that is some fucking bullshit. I don't want to lose it slow.
So to kick things off, we've got to talk about slow and fast weight loss because if your mind ain't right around this, then you run the risk of starting and stopping a diet like it is a fucking job.
And most of us got a job. We don't want a second one.
So what we got to do is fix one sentence that's going on in your head.
Instead of thinking, I want to lose weight fast, I want you to get really good at hearing that sentence and then reminding yourself, that's not exactly true. What I really want is to lose weight and never have to do it again.
Those are not the same things.
And I want you to really think about it. Which one would you pick?
If I gave you two opportunities and I said, you could lose it fast and by the end of the year you'll be at your goal weight, or you can lose it forever, and it might take you twice as long, but you'd never have to do it again.
Which one would you pick?
Most women would say, never fucking again.
It's not such an enjoyable experience that I want to do it over and over and over again.
It's alluring to do it fast. I'm not telling you it isn't tempting. There are reasons why you want to lose it fast that we're going to get into.
But I bet if you were being honest, you would tell me, fuck that shit. If it's going to take me twice as long, like let's say it can take six months and you lose it, or it can take a year and you lose it for good, I'd take a year every day, twice on Sunday.
Okay, so I know that both wanting to lose fast and wanting to lose forever, both of them feel really true in you.
Except when we talk about losing weight forever, that is a truth that lets you feel good for the rest of your life.
And that is why I wanted to pose the question.
Because losing fast, the only thing it really does, and the only reason why it feels alluring to us, is it gets us out of misery right now.
But it also sets us up to quit. It's got a huge downside because we will do shit that we know we will not keep doing once the weight comes off.
And I don't want you risking rebounding because you did things that you can't keep doing. I don't want you risking losing muscle, losing bone, and shit that doesn't make you look good in the mirror or even keep you healthy for a long time.
So this brings me to why I wanted to even do this podcast today, because I don't think anybody talks to women near enough about why wanting to lose weight fast is so reckless. And why telling yourself I'm losing it slow can also secretly sabotage your ability to lose all of your weight.
You see, most of us women, we want to lose weight fast because of how we talk to ourselves while we're overweight.
So back when I weighed 250 pounds, I would look at myself and think, I hate that I'm just so fat. I just wish I could lose weight. I'll be so much happier when I'm thinner.
It just felt like all day, every day, all I did was talk about my current weight like it was some miserable-ass prison.
And when you feel like you're in prison, what are you going to do?
You're going to sit there, and you're going to try to plan your escape. And you'll do anything it takes to get out of there.
Well, I don't want you just doing anything it takes to lose weight. I want you doing the shit that's going to become a lifelong habit.
I want you doing the stuff that makes sure you're not going to be breaking bones and barely able to eat anything when you're 70 years old.
And most importantly, I want you doing stuff that keeps the weight off for the rest of your life, like I did.
For so many years, I would sit there when I was 250 and focus on and think about all the things that I hated about myself and my weight.
It was no wonder I wanted to lose weight fast because I was creating such a miserable experience for myself each and every fucking day. And I blamed my misery on my weight.
I never ever thought that there was a way that I could be talking to myself when I was 250 pounds that was a little less cruel, a little less judgmental, and not so fucking awful.
You see, when you're creating a miserable situation in your mind day in and day out like I did, well, of course you're going to want to lose your weight fast.
You think losing weight is the only way to feel better. You don't even consider that speaking to yourself differently to feel better is an option.
So if you're sitting around talking smack to yourself constantly, never interrupting it, never trying to think anything different, it makes sense why you become desperate to lose weight fast, even if it's not even good for you.
So here's what I want you to do. I don't want you to create a prison that you're escaping from anymore.
The best way to lose weight is to notice when you're talking like ass to yourself. And then you try to talk to yourself a little bit less asshole-ish.
So just doing this one thing alone, I promise you, will reduce the urgency to lose weight so fast.
So instead of trying to escape something miserable, now we're going to lose weight because we're going to work towards something that we want for reasons that aren't based in being a fuck show because you're overweight.
Now, I want to give you a warning here because a lot of women will sit there and say, well, if I'm okay with where I'm at, then I'm going to lose all my motivation and I'm just going to sit there and be fat forever.
Y'all act like there's no way to lose weight unless you're a fucking miserable whore.
I'm not saying that you have to be okay with your weight.
But do you have to make yourself out to be a horrible person because of it to change?
No.
You can want to change because you want to wear different clothes, so you can wear things you're drawn to, versus wanting to lose weight because you hate the way you look in clothes.
It's very different energy.
I promise if you're nice to yourself, that doesn't kill motivation or make you complacent.
In fact, if you think being an ass to yourself is the answer, then why the hell aren't you thin by now?
If you've been trying to be an asshole to yourself forever, why haven't you just lost all your weight? Why aren't you riding high on motivation to start right this second?
I bet you're actually pretty complacent with putting off weight loss all the goddamn time. Complacent with the idea that you've failed so many times you can't lose weight.
I kind of think if you take a second to think about it, you being a jerk to yourself all the time is having the opposite effect that you think it should.
This is important. So write it down.
You can still want to lose weight and also like who you are, or at least be okay with who you are now.
It's kind of like when you buy a new car. Let's say you've got a car that you love. It's like a minivan I once had.
I loved that thing. It was roomy, it was cushy, and it was the first car I ever had where I could get Logan in and out without breaking my back.
From the time he was in a car seat all the way until he was in eighth grade, boy, I loved that minivan. It was my little ride or die.
But then when he got older, I started thinking, I just don't need this big-ass minivan anymore. I don't need this much space.
So I started wanting a sports car. I wanted something that was sexy and little and fast. And he could just sit in the front seat. I didn't even need a back seat anymore.
I didn't have to hate the minivan, despise it, call it names, and only find what's wrong with it in order to buy a sexy little Jaguar.
Sometimes all you got to do is tell yourself, hey, I've outgrown this version of me. I don't want to weigh this anymore. And here's what I want.
It can literally be as simple as that.
You do not have to pick yourself apart in the mirror to motivate yourself.
You do not have to tell yourself what a loser you are 24/7 for getting this bad.
You do not have to make where you're at now some type of inner prison that you must escape from.
Because when you do that, the only thing that's going to end up happening is you're going to be motivated to do dumb shit to lose weight fast. Shit that's not going to last you the rest of your life.
And anything that's actually what I call the forever pace of losing weight, you will call it slow.
Not only are you in a prison, but now you're like, I'm serving my time here slowly.
Like, what the fuck?
It's no wonder so many women do radical things to try to lose weight and then flame out fast.
Now, the next thing that comes up is when I tell women to quit making shit so miserable, they do not know how to talk to themselves any other way than with piss and venom.
Learning how to talk to yourself at any weight with respect, with love, compassion, understanding, and kindness, that is a huge topic.
I agree. It's not easy.
It is one of the ones that I work the most with inside of the No BS Weight Loss Program because honestly, at the heart of every woman's ability to lose weight, how you talk to yourself is sitting right there.
How you talk to yourself will dictate your eating.
You see, if you listen to this podcast, you're 100% an emotional eater. Don't even try to snow yourself.
When you feel bad, you probably eat to feel better.
When you're bored or lonely, you probably eat to feel alive or to add a touch of excitement to your life.
When you're anxious or overstimulated, you probably eat to soothe, calm down, or focus.
You probably eat to reward yourself.
Maybe you think you're amazing. Maybe you already are like, Corinne, I have amazing thoughts about myself, but I tend to eat to reward myself.
Bitch, that's emotional eating.
So emotional eating is the weight loss killer. And how we talk to ourselves about our life, our situations, and ourselves drives every ounce of it.
I focus hard on helping women think differently so they can eat differently. And that's going to make sure the weight stays off.
So basically, I teach women how to break the habit of being an asshole to themselves because if they don't, they'll be an ass to themselves in many ways.
You'll pick asshole diets that aren't good for you just to lose weight fast.
You'll do stupid shit because a bad person needs to be punished.
And the worst is you'll finally lose the weight and still not be happy with yourself.
You'll sit around thinking of all the years you wasted instead of the years you've added.
You'll find every flaw in your body and think you screwed yourself all the years you were fat.
I promise one of the best and most important things you can do to lose weight is to learn how to change the way you talk and relate to yourself at every weight, all the way down the scale from the beginning to the end, not just the goal weight.
So now that you know that setting up an inner prison to escape is going to keep you from losing weight and keeping it off, let's talk about what forever weight loss really looks like in terms of pacing.
I think, first and foremost, that if we're going to call anything slow, it should be actually the slower side of weight loss, which is going to be anywhere from zero to about 0.4 pounds a week consistently.
Then the next range, which is a half a pound to two pounds a week, I call that forever weight loss zone.
And anything above two pounds a week that is consistently happening at or above two pounds, I call it the reckless weight loss zone.
So let's break them down just a little bit.
So zero to 0.4 pounds a week, I actually call it slow weight loss because it's okay for you to go a little faster, but only if you want to. It doesn't make it better.
It's just one of those things like, do you want to speed it up just a little bit? You just have to remember that you may or may not want to go faster than that, and that's okay.
But let's say you do. Then you just need to look at what you're doing, and you make a few small changes.
But I wouldn't change jack fucking shit if you're emotionally eating.
So many women, the biggest mistake I see is they start trying to eat less. They try to start eating healthier. They try to work out more when they've got emotional eating still happening and they're not solving the obvious problem in the room.
You don't need to eat less, but you need to clean up your emotional eating.
You don't have to eat healthier if you're still emotionally eating.
So we want to fix the one thing that will keep the weight off forever, and that will be the emotional eating.
Do not waste decades trying to diet better when you just need to fix your emotional eating.
So when I say, look at what you're doing, this is what I mean.
I was recently on vacation. And when I came back, I waited a couple of weeks to weigh in. And when I did, I was up three pounds over my normal summer weight.
Now, it'd be easy to get freaked out on the scale when I step on. But instead of freaking out or deciding that I had ruined everything and that somehow I was going to gain 100 pounds back, I just asked myself a simple fucking question.
Looking at the last couple of weeks, what are little things that would have made a big difference?
And here I found some shit.
There was one night where Chris and I decided to get some ice cream, and I got a small Sonic Blast. I love them little fuckers, the little minis.
And I remember when I was eating it, and about halfway through, I knew that I'd had plenty, that I was done. But I decided to finish it anyway because I was sitting there thinking, well, I paid for it.
That was emotional eating right there.
I took some time to write about why I felt like paying for it was justifying my overeating. And when I wrote about it, I saw that I had ways to help myself see that I didn't want to pay for it on the scale anymore.
That I would gladly trade the $2 of ice cream that I was fixing to toss into the trash if it meant being at my summer goal weight.
And that just came with reflection.
So I just decided for the next week or two, I was going to really pay attention to every moment that I was trying to eat past enough. And I wanted to understand why.
If there was any emotional eating, I wanted to start there and clean that up.
I didn't have to make any radical changes to what I was eating. I didn't have to cut out bread. I didn't have to stop eating ice cream. I didn't have to start doubling down at the gym.
I just started paying attention and just saying, all right, are we at enough? If we are and we want to keep going, let's figure out why.
And you know what? The next thing I knew, about three pounds had come off.
It was as easy as that.
So now let's talk about the reckless weight loss zone because that's going to be anything above two pounds a week consistently.
If this is you, wanting to lose weight like that, I want you to ask yourself a simple question.
In order to lose weight at that pace, am I going to be able to do things in a way that I don't have to make myself do them all the time?
Because the truth is, it is really hard to lose weight if you're constantly having to make yourself do shit, especially shit you don't want to be doing for the rest of your life.
One thing that can sober you up is to look at some numbers.
It took me 18 months to lose 100 pounds, which is about 1.38 pounds per week.
Now, if I had really wanted to do it in half the time, it would have only taken nine months, but I would have had to have lost 2.7 pounds every single week.
So a question that I asked myself way back in the day was this. All this shit that I'm going to do in order to be able to lose 2.7 pounds a week, am I going to be able to do that for nine straight months without wavering? Am I going to be able to do it even after I lose my weight?
And the answer was, no, I'm not going to be able to do that.
But the stuff that I was doing to get me to the 1.38 pounds, that shit just felt doable. It didn't feel like it was going to be too hard. I didn't mind it because I was talking to myself differently the whole time.
And it didn't feel like it was taking forever. It felt like I was losing at a good clip. It felt like my life was changing. I felt successful. And I was talking to myself about all of those things every single day.
What I did was I didn't create a prison. I didn't have a prison to escape anymore because I was working on how I talked to myself.
So that pace felt good. It didn't feel slow at all. It just felt like I was becoming someone I always wanted to become.
You see, one thing that we don't even think about when we're just losing weight from misery is, are we even losing the weight we want to lose?
Your body really likes your fat, y'all. Even if you don't like it, your body thinks that that fat is serving a big-ass purpose.
When you lose weight really fast, your body is trying to lose anything but the fat that you can see in the mirror. It's going to prioritize your bone, your muscle, your organ fat above everything else.
And the last time I checked, I have not had one woman ever come to me and say, I just wish somebody would come up to me and tell me, girl, your liver is looking really sexy today.
Now, we want people to notice that we're losing weight. And in order to do that, you've got to lose weight in what I call the forever zone, the forever pace.
A half a pound to two pounds a week means that your body has the ability to prioritize the fat that you and everybody else can see.
Now, of course, to lose weight, you need to strength train. And if you don't want to lose muscle, we're not going to get into all that today. Just know y'all need to be lifting some weights. That's stuff that you can go research.
But I will tell you, losing weight really fast and aggressively forces your body to want to lose weight any means it can, which means it's going to prioritize things you don't want to lose. That will leave you looking like a sad sack of shit at the end.
So when you are losing a half a pound to two pounds a week, you are not losing weight slow. Quit saying that crap.
Get that out of your vocabulary. Never allow yourself to say it again.
If you hear yourself say it, say, no, I'm not. Here's what I'm doing. I'm creating a way for me to lose weight where that shit never comes back.
I'm doing forever weight loss, bitches.
So part of forever weight loss means that if I feel like it's moving too slow, I need to check how the fuck I'm talking to myself about where I'm at right now.
Because that's what's making me want to escape. That's what's driving me crazy.
It ain't the weight driving me crazy. It's how I talk about myself that's driving me crazy.
So what kind of prison am I creating for myself right now that makes me so desperate for an escape plan that I'm willing to go do shit I don't need to be doing?
That's what I want you fixing.
Don't try to do reckless crap in order to lose weight.
So this week, I just want you to think about a few things.
First, have you even thought about describing your weight loss as forever versus slow? If not, think about that.
Second, are you creating a prison to escape from right now? If so, who could help me with that? Probably Corinne. Get on the wait list.
And third, am I fixing the right things when I'm losing weight? Am I working on my emotional eating or am I just trying to diet harder?
Ask those questions of yourself. They're so important or I wouldn't give them to you.
All right, that is it for this week. Have a good one.
