Eating in response to emotion is the most common way of overeating. In fact, it's one of the most frequent topics we talk about.
How do you know when you’re really hungry?
- First, you aren’t standing in front of the pantry look for something. There’s no “this sounds good” bullshit happening.
- Second, you won’t think “I’ll regret this” or “I better eat now before I talk myself out of it” going on in your brain.
- And third, you are eating according to your plan.
We love to think hunger is hard to figure out. It’s not.
Ask yourself, “Am I hungry?” If the answer is maybe or I’m not sure then wait. If you aren’t willing to wait then YOU KNOW you are likely emotionally eating; meaning, you either are bored, frustrated, ready to decompress, or stressed.
When I want to eat off my plan or when I am not hungry, and yes it happens, I always require myself to tell the truth. I will eat if I want to but only after I am truthful about why I am eating.
It keeps me from pretending like hunger is confusing or hard.

I know I’m at least making progress, bc I’m at least regularly thinking about if I’m hungry when I’m unconsciously grabbing for food. I’m not quite good enough at it or quick enough to catch myself before I actually grab-ass something, but in 47 years, I can honestly say I don’t ever recall even thinking about it. So thank you, Corinne!! I’m a work in progress. -74 since May, about another 176 to go. I have NO doubt I’ll get there, thanks in large part to you. 😍
